Sharon - Season 1 - Episode 26

So, I just nodded and smiled at her then walked to my seat. Sharon was looking at me all this while but, didn’t say anything. When I sat down I just smiled at her, she smiled back too then I started arranging my books without saying a word. I was already crying inside and talking could expose me, thank God the tears weren’t rolling yet so, I needed to keep it that way. Sharon dropped a sheet of paper on my desk, I looked at her and she was smiling. I smiled too then read what she wrote on the sheet;
“Didn’t know you were this strong”. I looked at her again and she was still smiling, that’s something with her this morning, she was smiling often but, this time she added a wink. Well, it was good I didn’t cry after all. I also wrote on the sheet:
” Am I really strong? “. Then passed it to her. We were back to how we started, chat/writing as she called it, I’d missed it so much. She returned the sheet soon and it read:
” it wasn’t easy boning uncle James whip, was it?”. James was the Gateman’s name, we were asked to always address him as uncle James and not as the gateman. Guess it sounded rude or awkward calling a literate man in his mid thirties a gateman but, personally I didn’t see anything wrong with it. I mean that’s what he does in our school and that’s why he is being paid. Or is there anything rude about addressing a tailor as a tailor?.

Sharon and I kept chat/writing even when our form mistress was doing her Role call, my name was called for the fifth time before I responded, at a point during our Technical Drawing class I laughed out loudly to everyone’s hearing and when our teacher asked me what was wrong with me, I lied I just remembered a joke my dad said yesterday night during dinner. Lucky enough he left me without even a warning, well he was never a Strict discipline type. I prayed there wouldn’t be break because I didn’t want this little time I had with Sharon to end yet. During the chat, she apologized for what she said to me the day before, she Said she didn’t mean it but I wouldn’t understand why. Ofcourse I already understood why she was over reacting to every thing. I told her it was okay that I’d gotten over it. The last thing she wrote to me before break was:
“And I actually know you’re caring, I always see it all over your face”. When I read that, I didn’t know what Else to write, I just kept staring at her and she returned my stare too just that she was smiling and I wasn’t. This girl just wouldn’t stop amazing me. Our eyes were never going to lose contact of each other if not for the sound of the bell. She smiled once she heard the bell, brought out her pancakes then stood up to leave. I dragged the pack from her hand expecting her to come for it but, she didn’t. She looked at me in a strange way then turned to leave, I understood her perfectly. Nobody had to know we were getting along once more, that was why she choosed writing than talking to me, even though she didn’t know I was aware of all these. I called her and she turned, I took one of the pancakes and handed the pack to her. She hesitated for a while, looked at the few faces in class then started coming back. She was about to collect it then suddenly stopped, she was looking at something else, it wasn’t the the pancakes but, it was on my hand. I couldn’t figure out what she was looking at till she came took my right hand to have a closer look at my arm. That was when i realized the cane’s red marks on my arm was still as bold as it was. At that moment she didn’t care about who was looking at us, she was just looking at my arm.

“Is this uncle James’s..?”. She asked referring to the swollen lines on my arm and I nodded. That was the first time she said something to me that day with her mouth.
” you’re not feeling much pain there, are you?”. I smiled at her question. If only she knew I was almost going to cry out loud earlier, if only she knew how much I endured walking into class without shedding tears and that she was my painkiller. It was my chat with her that made me forget the pain. I smiled and shook my head.
“Not anymore”. I said to her. She massaged the spot a bit then looked upwards.
” You really have to stop being late Godson”. She said in a low calm voice, it’s certain she was bothered about me but, one thing she might not change was my lateness to school.

“Well, does that mean I deserved this?”. I asked her referring to my sore arm. She swallowed hard and shook her head.
” No, you didn’t “.

She took out some of her snacks and kept it on my desk then walked out slowly. As she left, I wished I could ask her to stay, that I’ve missed her company all this while. I didn’t feel like going for break anymore, I just sat there staring at the second door where she passed.

“Are you going to stare at the forever?”. A voice said behind me, of course I already knew whom it was, I turned and smiled at her. Chidimma came closer and took one of the pancakes that Sharon kept for me, took a bite from it and smiled at Me.
” you know I think we’re making progress “. She winked at me.
” by We you mean?”. I jokingly asked her and she laughed.
” okay I mean you”. She said while still laughing.

“Seriously? Tell me something”. Chidimma hardly went for break, she’d rather sit back in her chair and read novels and Textbooks. Me on the other hand wasn’t just in the mood for break today so, I decided to spend my time chatting with her. She sat down on Sharon seat and we started chatting. We both ate the pancakes, then she went and brought her food and we ate too, I loved indomie a lot then so, I wasn’t going to let it pass me. Chidimma left once it was break over. Sharon didn’t talk to me after break, not even a word.
