​I quickly got up from my bed and went to where my clothes were and started packing my clothes. My sister was still staring at me then she stood up to go.“well…. Romoke, just make sure you make the right decision and follow your heart so you won’t end up like me”. She tied her scarf to her waist and left the room. Unlikeme, sis Nike was not lucky, she was sold out to a trader, I would say sold out because Maami needed money as at then for her firewood business so she sold her out at age 18. Sis Nike got m, arried to the man and he used her anyhow he wanted, though he already had 3 wives. Sis Nike sometimes gets beaten by her husband, sometimes when her husband comes home drunk she would be raped by him. Life was so unbearable for her, even when she started having kids, she would be beaten, starved. There was a day she ran to Maami for money.“I won’t even dare make such mistake”. I said, tucking the last piece of cloth into myworn-out traveling bag and zipped it carefully, I checked round the room to make sure there was nothing left then I closed the door and left.***************** Babatope smiled to himself just the mention of her name sent him sparks and blood rushing fast and hotthrough his veins,. He wiggled his legs again and smiling in anticipation for Romoke’s grand entrance, at least those dangling orange-sized bossom will be his forever he thought this time around he laughed out causing his friend Aremu to look at him, but where was his orange-sized lover? He frowned his face it was taking forever to wait for her, he whisperedto his friend who in turn cleared his throat and said” ahemmm… Iya Romoke, time is going wewant to go with our bride” Babatope nodedhis head, Aremu is his spokesman that was why he brought him over to Romoke’shouse so that if she gets too stubborn, Aremu would help him bundle her out of their house.“ahnahn Nike, Romoke is supposed to be here by now, where is she “? Maami sq££zed her face and stared at her daughter. Her room is poorly lit from the Lantern at the center of the room, there is also a spring bed at the right side of the room, beside the window is just a table and two cane chairs beside it were piles ofclothes neatly folded on the floor, then a water pot is also at the farthest corner of the room. Maami, Alake (maami’s first daughter and Nike sat on the bed while Babatope and his friend sat on the cane chairs.“please go and check her again ” Aremu said, while Babatope shifted impatiently on the cane chair,. Alake and Nike stood up to go and check for Romoke while Maami tried to clear the tensed air” ehmmm my inlaw ” she smiled revealing her coloured teeth, Babatope did not smile he just grunted and kept on staring at the door.” Maami!!!….. We can’t find Romoke! ”******************Maami rose up and started wailing, while the other wives trooped in from different angles.“ahhh!!…… Egba miii oooo (please help me), Romoke has killed me ” she rolled on the ground while her daughters and the other wives helped her to sit, Babatope was already on his feet shaking his head angrily this time around he spoke out, ” see! Iya Romoke, if you don’t bring Romoke to my home tomorrow then be ready to pay back my money! Tell ur husband what I said! Aremu let’s go” with that they left. Maami kept on shouting “ahhh Romoke has killed me”. Some of herco-wives kept on mocking her especially Iya Bisi. When the people trooping in were too much, Nike got up to shut the door justthen Baba walked in. Baba is in his late 60s, hw is a very poor farmer and a lover of women, his teeth were already coloured as a result of the drinks and kolanut he took, Baba cared less of his children, he doesn’t even know all of them all he cared about was sampling women.“what is happening here? ” he bent down to feel maami’s body temperature then he sat on one of the cane chairs.” Baba….. Romoke is no where to be found”“….. Romoke?” he scratched his Grey head again and squinted his eyes trying to remember who Romoke is.



Then Nike spoke up angrily, “Romoke is my younger sister…….. The one Babatope paid her brideprice”baba suddenly opened his eyes wide “ahhh… Romoke, I remember now so where could she have gone to”Maami sat up and stared at her husband“my husband…. Huhmmm Babatope is so upset, he said we should get ready to return all the foodstuffs and money we took from him if we don’t find Romoke…. “.She sniffed again whipping her eyes with the edge of her wrapper.“….. And that is the most painful part….. Don’t worry we will find her” with that, he stood up and walked out of the room.***********************”am sure they would have been looking for me by now”. Ihanded the cup back to Bola and stood upto face the window, I felt tears on my cheeks. “Romoke…… Stop thinking, u are here now and we shall both leave this village by tomorrow”. Bola has been my friend right from primary school, she’s not from a polygamous home like me, her parents are Christians but are separated, she lives with her dad in Abuja and comes home to see her mum in the village. Unlike me she already has a suitor and she also works in Abuja. I cleaned my tears as I struggled to talk “Bola…… Thank you, God bless you”“oya,….
