Colors of the heart - Season 1 - Episode 11

Skye

Grey, Grey represents depression and Regret. I didn’t think of the consequences of my actions and how it would affect others, I didn’t also think of the effect it would have on me. If I’d known I’d be miserable afterwards, I probably wouldn’t even have spared him a glance in the past.

Skye wasn’t at Louisa’s place when Cherry got there. Cherry looked around the apartment not knowing whether to cry or laugh. What had she been thinking? Of course she’d noticed how her little sister looked at Melvin sometimes but she hadn’t thought that it would lead to anything because she trusted Melvin and she trusted Skye also.
And Teddy? She should have known it was rather strange for Teddy to start giving Skye so much attention. She’d also thought he was only doing that to piss off Louisa. Tears dropped to her cheek, but she’d been the clueless one. Her friends had been doing various things behind her back and they’d all left her out of it.

And Melvin… How could she be with a man who’d slept with her junior sister? It didn’t matter to her whether he was conscious or not when it had happened, it was wrong and she hated it, she couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Cherry sat on a chair and looked around the house. Even the Shade incident was all her idea, you can imagine little Skye already plotting how to get a man.

Cherry laughed bitterly, her little sister, the one she’d practically raised was now old enough to deceive her and her friends.

Louisa walked into the house moments later. She saw Cherry sitting on her couch and stopped by the door. “She’s gone?” Louisa asked.
“Isn’t that obvious?” Cherry asked angrily. Louisa said nothing else for a while “Teddy said he didn’t kiss Skye, she told me he did. She probably lied, Teddy is telling the truth” Louisa said.

Cherry whipped around furiously “And since when did you become his advocate?” Cherry asked.

Louisa shrugged “I’m sorry Skye did that to you” Louisa said calmly. “Forget about Skye, how about you? You encouraged her, you kept secrets from me. You’re the reason everything happened” Cherry said.
“Maybe, maybe not. But one thing is clear, I never told Skye to s£duce Melvin or blackmail him. That was all your sister’s idea” Louisa said.

“Don’t put all the blame on Skye, you should have told her to forget about Melvin!” Cherry shouted at Louisa.

“And do you think she would have forgotten about him whether or not I asked her to?” Louisa yelled back.

Cherry scoffed “The only reason you wanted her to go for Melvin is because you were scared she’d go after your Teddy. He’s not even yours after all, looks like she wanted the both of them” Cherry said.

Louisa shook her head “I told her to go for Melvin because I…I knew Melvin loves you and he would never betray you knowingly. And I wanted you to see the true shade of your sister” Louisa said.

“Well Congratulations, you’ve shown me her true color and also ruined everything else” Cherry said with a mock bow.
Louisa shook her head “I haven’t ruined anything but guess what? If you leave Melvin and break off your engagement, you’ll let her win. Then you can say everything is ruined, because you left a good man who loves you because of the mistake a little spoiled brat made” Louisa said.
Cherry watched her best friend for a while and weighed her words. She was about to reply Louisa when her phone rang, she dipped her hand into her pocket and brought out her phone before answering the call.
“Cherry Evans here” She answered, she hadn’t looked at the caller ID.
“Cherry, it’s me. Skye is here, she doesn’t look fine and she isn’t saying anything. What happened?” Mr Evans asked.
“Where exactly is she?” Cherry asked immediately. “She’s in her room” Mr Evans answered.

“Lock the doors, make sure she doesn’t leave until I get there” Cherry said.
“Why, what happened? Is everything okay, did….she… Has she done anything?” Her father asked.

Cherry took in a deep breath ” Dad, just do as I’ve asked. I’ll explain when I get there” Cherry said.

“Okay, I’ll be waiting” Mr Evans said and ended the call.

“I have to go now, That was my dad. Skye is in his house” Cherry explained even though it wasn’t necessary. She didn’t owe Louisa anything.

“Should I come with you?” Louisa asked. “To do what?” Cherry asked getting irritated.

“You’re right, it’s a family thing, so I won’t interfere or get involved. Just think about all I’ve said. He really loves you….” Louisa said and headed into her bedroom.

Skye shoved her old dresses into her bag, the ones she left behind at her father’s house when she left for Cherry’s. She thought of her stuffs at Melvin and Cherry’s place.
Was she ever going to get them back? Her brushes, the color palette and her new dresses. Those were the important things she had there, the brushes especially.

Tears ran down her cheeks “Everything was ruined, Melvin….he’d ruined everything. God, she hated him…..” her heart thumped loudly as she heard her father’s footsteps outside the door.

She quickly swiped her tears away and hurried to the door. She tried to open it but the door wouldn’t budge, the door was locked.

Her heart thumped louder and faster than before. “Dad, daddy” she called. There was no response.
“Cherry must have called, she’s probably coming here” she whispered to herself as she drifted into panic mode . She couldn’t face Cherry, or her father, she couldn’t bear the disgrace, the shame.
“Open the door please” she shouted and b@nged the door loudly. Would Cherry come with Louisa, Melvin and Teddy also?
“Open the door now or I’ll hurt myself” Skye resorted to empty threats. Desperation was clawing at her throat, she needed to get out of this house.

Why had she come here? She should have gone to Olivia’s house.
“Daddy open the door, I’m begging you…. Please” she shouted again but her father didn’t answer.

She fell to the floor and wept. What could she do? She had to face the inevitable.

The inevitable arrived thirty minutes later, her father met her by the door.

“She’s crying, Cherry….Tell me what’s going on?” her father said concerned.

Cherry sighed “She’ll tell you herself, where are the keys?” Cherry asked her father. Her father nodded slowly and motioned for her to come with him.
Cherry followed him to Skye’s room and watched him unlock the door. Skye stood up immediately she heard the chinking sounds of the keys.

Her eyes went wide when she saw Cherry. “Cherry….” she whispered. Cherry watched her with cold eyes. Skye lowered her eyes “I’m sorry” she murmured.
“You’re sorry?” Cherry asked walking over to her and landing a slap on her face. “Cherry what’s going on?” her father asked immediately. Cherry had never hit her sister before, this came as a big shock. What had happened?

The second slap followed “You’re sorry? What exactly are you sorry for, lying to me, framing Shade, sleeping with my fiancé conniving with Louisa, who the hell are you and where have you been hiding?” Cherry screamed at her.

Mr Evans stared at his daughters in shock as heard the allegations. “How could you betray me like that?! I’ve sacrificed so much for you, ungrateful little brat. I dropped out of school so you could go to school, I’ve looked after you since you were a child. Everything you asked for I’ve given, yet you had the mind, the heart to drug my fiancé, sleep with him and blackmail him afterwards!” Cherry screamed at her slapping her again.

“What?” her father looked at Skye in shock. Surely she was mistaken, Skye would never do that.

“What do you mean she framed Shade?” Her father asked Cherry. “I mean your girlfriend didn’t touch her, she did all that on her own” Cherry screamed angrily.

Mr Evans turned to Skye “You injured yourself on purpose?” he asked. Skye shook her head “I’m… Sorry…. I didn’t mean to… ” she whispered and broke into tears.
“Stop those silly crocodile tears, and You… Cherry. You told me you left school because the University wasn’t favoring you anymore, what do you mean you left because of Skye?” Mr Evans asked.

“I left because I had to work to pay her school fees!” Cherry screamed at him angrily.

“What are you talking about? I gave her money for her school fees every term, I paid for text books and other stationery . I paid for every external exam even the graduation ceremony. I didn’t come during the graduation ceremony because she said I wasn’t needed there! That you girls didn’t want me around as always, like every other event that took place in school. ” Mr Evans shouted.

“What?” Cherry asked disoriented. “How do you think I wouldn’t pay my child’s school fees, do you think I’m a terrible father? Everything I work for is for you girls, you two grew up hating me. Have I hurt you girls in anyway?” Mr Evans asked her.
“Skye said you always insulted her and maltreated her. She said, you told her you couldn’t waste money on someone who kept repeating classes….” Cherry said.
“No, I never said that, neither have I insulted or maltreated Skye. I paid Skye’s fee every term. I have receipts to prove it. I only told her I would never waste money sending her to an art institute if she dropped out of highschool, that I would never waste money on that kind of education. Didn’t she tell you she wanted to drop out of secondary school and go to an arts institute?” Mr Evans argued.

Cherry turned to Skye “You were collecting money from me for your school fees and other things. What did you do with it?” Cherry asked slowly feeling faint already.
She couldn’t believe that this was happening, how could she have been so stupid to fall for Skye’s tricks. She should have asked her father first, Skye had insisted that there was no need to and that she didn’t want their father’s problem. Somehow she and her father had drifted apart because Skye was always badmouthing her father, now she knew why. It was because he didn’t support her reckless idea of dropping out of secondary school.
“What have you been using my money for?” Cherry asked getting angry again.
Skye sniffed “I….I was saving it” Skye said.
“For what?” Cherry asked.
“What did you need money for so badly that you deceived me, that you made me drop out of school? I was working daily and I gave you eighty percent of my salary every month end for books, for fees, Waec this, project that, Gce, excursion, camp…..what did you do with the money?!” Cherry screamed at her.
“You… You once said Melvin was trying to raise capital to start up a business….I thought that if I saved enough money and gave it to him. He….he would….” Skye was saying when Cherry cut her off.

“He would what, he would gratefully fall in love with you and marry you? How could you, how could you do that to me?!” Cherry screamed at her.

Mr Evans sighed and looked at the duo. “How much money have you saved now?” he asked Skye.
“It’s about seven hundred thousand, interest included” Skye answered.
“You will write a cheque for your sister and give her every dime you took from her” Mr Evans said.

Cherry shook her head. “No…keep the money. Use it, go far away from me, far away from us. I don’t care where you go to, just get out of this house and leave us alone. You’ve done enough” Cherry said looking at her junior sister in disbelief.
“Cherry please…” Skye begged going on her knees.

“Go away, leave this house. I no longer see you as my sister, leave” Cherry said hardening her heart not to fall for Skye’s tears. Who knew what she was planning again.

Mr Evans sighed “She was already packing” he told Cherry.
“She’s a big girl now, she can look after herself. She has enough money, if she’s old enough to deceive people, lie to them, drug and blackmail men, she’s old enough to live alone” Cherry said walking out of the room.

Mr Evans followed without sparing his second daughter a backward glance.

Skye fell to her knees and sobbed again. It was all over, she was ruined.
She’d lost everything.
