His phone’s alarm rang very loud, vibrating the whole bed. Chuks groaned, and Segun raised his head, eyes groggy with sleep.

“Please turn that thing off,” he said. Chuks picked up the phone. Snooze or dismiss. He clicked the latter and let the phone drop to the bed.

Still lying down, Segun stretched one leg. “What’s the time?” Chuks hissed. Looking at the phone as he turned the alarm off had hurt his eyes. He just kept them closed and ignored Segun’s question until he checked it by himself. “Eight-thirty. Jesus Christ, today is going to be a long day, but I don’t even want to stand up. I feel like I’m nursing a hangover.”

“Let me call her too.”

There was a moment’s silence.
“Hello sir, it’s Chukwudi speaking.”
“Yeah, hey. It’s me, Segun, from the range.”

“I’m just calling to let you know that I’m busy this morning, so I won’t be able to make it there until afternoon.” It wasn’t as if he was lying. Sleepcouldkeep a person busy.
“Yeah, I’m just waking up. We got back late last night. But I’m just calling to reschedule, not to cancel.”

“So, where should I meet you, your place or the police department?”
“Okay, we’ll discuss later.”

Both of them dropped their phones, and they settled well on the bed. “Bros, see you later.”

“I’ll see you later, too,” Segun said with another yawn.
