Story: True Life Story Of An Addict

Me: What do you want me to do now?

Sister: Forgive her of course.

I looked at Deola’s face, soaked in tears. Not wanting to offend my sister, I raise her up from her knees and hugged her. She was just crying and crying. Her cry irritated me the more but I dare not show any displeasure else I will offend my sister. She left both of us in the room and left for the sitting room. When Deola knew we’re left alone, she continued her plea,

Deola: Please Femi, forgive me impudence. I am so sorry. I just don’t know what I was doing.

Me: It’s alright. It’s ok, stop crying. Let’s get to the sitting room.

When my sister saw both of us coming, she smiled and said,

Sister: Thank God you’ve reconciled. Can I have something to eat now?

Deola smiled and said,

Deola: What would like to eat ma?

Sister: Don’t bother my dear. Let Femi do the trouble.

Deola: Not so ma. He is in pain already because of me. Besides, I can’t be in the house while Femi will be cooking. Not possible.

Sister: Woman, before you start theorizing about your duties, remember he’s still my brother, a kid brother at that. But for your excuse that he’s in pain, I would have loved to see him cook for me. You can go ahead and cook whatever you want.

Deola: Ok ma.

She turned to me and asked,

Do you have food stuffs at home?

Me: Go and check. I should still have some in there.

When she left for kitchen, my sister turned to me and said,

Sister: I think I like her. Or is she behaving this nice because I am here?

Me: No. she’s actually a nice lady. I really can’t explain what happened to her. Maybe a brief moment of madness got overblown in her head.

Sister: Eyin mejeji le mo. Sa so ara e (That’s both your problems. Just be careful).

Me: Yes ma. How are your husband and my nephews?

Sister: They are all fine. My husband sends his greeting too.

Me: Ok.

Deola came out of the kitchen to inform us that she’s settling for rice. I have already process tomatoes in the freezer. So all she need do is cook some of it. After the meal, Deola said she wanna start going. My sister stood up and gave her a hug (I seriously don’t know why she did that till now). She even walked her downstairs. Whatever!

She came back upstairs looking relaxed and happy. She sat comfortably on the chair, crossed her legs and said,

Sister: Femi I must confess that I am disappointed in you. You know the dangers in double dating and the effect on posterity. You didn’t see this with me even before I got married. Ever since you have complained of wanting to stay alone I have been scared of what you will eventually become…and now, what I just witnessed justified my fear. Tell me about the one that died. I purposely didn’t ask you about her while she was here cos that will definitely get her annoyed. What is her name? Where is she from? How did she die?

Me: We met by destiny. Her name is Iniobong, a Calabar girl. She works at a nearby supermarket. We developed mutual love for each other, and truly sister, I loved her with all my life. She was the only girl I love.

Sister: A Calabar girl? What about Deola? You don’t love her right?

Me: Deoal’s case is different. It was something I never thought would happen. She was the nurse assigned to me by my boss when I was sick. She was instructed to keep a close eye on me and make sure I use my drugs. She’s my boss’ nurse too. What started between was like a dream. I never loved her at first but later, I begin to love her. Truth be told, she’s a very good woman, a wife material too. But as for me, I loved Iniobong more. It’s painful she had to die today.

Sister: Hmmmm. I am sorry Femi. But now she’s gone ok? If you claim you love Deola, you will focus on her alone henceforth. There is no joy in having multiple partners. It will only give you pain at the end. What if she had used a gun instead of knife? Please, it’s never a good thing. I have always been proud of you, proud of your achievements, hardwork, simplicity and humility. This story is what I never thought I will hear of you. You know what we faced while growing up because of our father’s reckless lifestyle. I remembered the three of us, alongside your brother, vowed on the day our dad was buried that we will have no pact with his reckless lifestyle. Why have you gone back on those words? Retrace your steps Femi. Iwa pele ni iwa omoluabi (Gentleness is a virtue of a good child).

Those words sank into my head. Since then I promised to be straight and plain. I vowed to have just one girl at a time, if I must have one. But the part I couldn’t come to terms with yet is accepting Deola back. Sincerely I was so scared earlier today with the way she behaved. It hurts me when a guy said that I was “a lazy chicken” for allowing Deola stabbed me, that I should have seized the knife from her. What if at the point of struggling with her something else happened?

Eventually my boss came around. He met my sister and they both exchanged pleasantries. When he noticed my hand he asked,

Oga: Femi what happened to your hand?

With a lightning speed, I winked at my sister before replied my boss,

Me: I fell down sir. But it’s ok now.

Oga: Sure? Has Deola been here and seen this?

My sister replied,

Sister: Yes sir. In fact, she left not long ago.

Oga: Alright. It’s nice to see you shaking up. That’s life my brother. We meet to part. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

Me and my Sister: Amen.

My boss spent few more minutes with us before he took his leave. We walked him downstairs and watched him zoomed off. My sister spent the next few days with me advising me about how to treat women and what they really want. On Sunday morning after church, she left. Thank God she came around. Forever I will miss her.
