Must Read: Behind The Veil

About twenty minutes later the door bell rang. He heard a familiar voice and soon after the visitor knocked on his door.
“Vanessa knocking on my door! Wow! I never thought this day would come!” he exclaimed.
“Hello to you too.” she said vibrantly.

“You’re looking ethereal. What has changed since the last time i was here?” Sadiq.

She sat on the cushion that was adjacent Sadiq’s bed. “Nothing. The yoga class I’m going to must be paying off” she observed her fingernails admiring the two different colors she had used on her index finger and ring finger of both hands. “I saw your new status update on facebook. Seeing your location, i hurried over since i was just at home, alone. The house maid left for vacation till God knows when.”
“I had to announce my arrival. It’s one thing I’ve learned from you.”
“Speaking of learning, hope you’ve really learnt how to act really good? Because you have to be very convincing when you go down on your knees and ask me the four letter words.” Vanessa.

“About that…mind shedding a little light on it?”
“All right” she began. “Its very simple. We lost our contract when we violated one of the terms of the contract; for us to be a couple. If we had just announced that we are back together, they will be suspicious and see it as a cheap shot at getting back our deal and they may even delay the contract for maybe a year or two to observe our claim of being back together.”

Sadiq nodded in agreement. “Go on”
“But if we play our cards differently by surprising them with our fake engagement, which must be very convincing, they will take us serious and that might even inspire a new sequel to your story by telling how we went from being ex to engaged, and revealing Jennifer’s evil schemes too. It will be a best seller and they won’t have any choice than to believe us and renew the contract.”

Sadiq stood up, applauding her. “You’re a genius!”
“I know.” She welcomed the compliment.
“What or how did you come about this idea?”
“When Sarah told me about her engagement to Jojo. It just dawned on me that this is it!” she elaborated.

“So i guess we are going to buy a really expensive ring, take a picture, add the caption ‘just got engaged’ and post it on instagram?”
“No.” she stood up. “The part about buying an expensive ring is right though. Cant have me wearing those cheap under the bridge no carate gold ring. Those fashion critics can smell a faux item from a mile away. Anyway grand pa will be hosting a fund raiser at his residence; The Walters on Saturday. That will be the perfect place for us to make it public. Paparazzi will be present, and you trust how their news travel fast.”
“Thats five days from now. This will be one hell of a theatric and dramatic stunt we will be pulling off!” Sadiq excited about it.

“They asked for it. And for Jennifer, we will also release that audio you recorded when she confessed her mischief. She doesn’t know what’s waiting for her!” Smiled Vanessa.

The next morning Sadiq rouse early inorder to warm the engine of his soon to be car. Entering the car, it still smelt new. He observed the car keys and noticed it came with a transmitter.

It’s very essential in case the car keys ever got lost, the location of the key can be traced.

He left the engine running for some minutes and shut himself inside the car listening to the radio and looking for the flimsiest excuse to stay longer in the car. He finally got out when mom called him to come have breakfast.

“I can’t wait to drive that car out of the gate.” he admitted at the dining table.

“Will i get a car too?” Asmau, with her fork hanging in her mouth.

“Of course you will. But in the main time i will have to chauffeur you around in my car. We can go anywhere you want.” Sadiq.

“Anywhere?” She asked excitedly.
“Yes.”
She chuckled. “I can’t wait.”
“Hurry up Asmau. The school bus will be here anytime soon.” Their mom jumped in. She didn’t like how the school bus driver always blare out the bus horn each time Asmau wasn’t down before the bus came, it was as if he was deliberately trying to be rude.

Sadiq cringed on the two arm sofa after breakfast, watching the english premier league highlights of the weekend matches. He sat patiently waiting for arsenal’s highlight while he laughed at Chelsea’s lose and frowned at the two united’s win. He has been an arsenal fan since forever, since the time of Thierry Henry. In fact the reason he joined arsenal was because he enjoyed watching Henry play.

That had inspired him to play for his school team in secondary school. Although he played as a defender because there were better striker than he was. He always thought he could do better, but as always his fear restricted him from proving to his team mates that he was good at striking.

His phoned beeped. It was Vanessa informing him about the ring they were to purchase later today at the Palms Lekki.

Going through his whatsapp, he saw Janelle online. He decided to call her through the whatsapp call.

“Hello Janelle”
“Sadiq! Wasn’t expecting your call. Especially through whatsapp.” she replied.

“I know. Just saw you online on whatsapp and thought i should say hi” actually that’s a lie.

The reason he called was to find out what she declined from telling him that night.

Girls were strange, he never understood them.

In fact they probably don’t even understand themselves. They always expect you to know what’s wrong with them without them telling you. I mean when did the male folks become pyschics that can read the female mind?

Or why would they start a conversation and never finish it, buttering it with ‘Never mind’ yet they actually want you to mind. And then leave you thinking, wondering what they might be thinking. Or they probably think that what all male folks do is think about them 24/7! Only jobless ones do so. E.g our very own Sadiq. But he seems to be making a living out of it by writing the ‘Who is she’ novel.

“That’s so nice of you. How’s your parents and your sister?”
“They are fine.” he replied and continued. “Are you ready tell me what up wanted to tell me on my birthday but didn’t?”
The line was silent for a while.

“Hello? Are you still there?” he asked.

“Yes i am here. Oh my God” she exclaimed peevishly. “i don’t think i can tell you while you listen. I will rather text it to you.” she insisted.

He didn’t have a choice and didn’t want to protest against it before she changes her mind.

“Okay fine. I will be waiting.”

“All right.” She replied.

“I will be holding my phone and staring at it till your message comes in.” he added.
She laughed. “Cut the line so i can start composing the message.”

“Okay. Waiting…….” he said and hung up.
