I opened my sleepy eyes trying to adjust to the brightness in the room.

“Oga, you nor dey go house?” Bright asked. Bright was the steward who cleans the server room and locks up after every one
had left.

“What time is it?” I asked him, automatically looking at my wristwatch. 5:45pm.

“I think past 5 sir.” He said.

“Thanks Bright. I will just relax for a while.

I will leave much later.” I told him.

He nodded and excused himself. I had missed the Staff Bus. But that was the least of my worries. I was worried about how
Cynthia intended to use me during my last two months of youth service. If she tried to get me to do something, I would not be
able to refuse her. She had something on me that could dent my image with the company and even cost me my NYSC Discharge
Certificate. What if she decided to blackmail me? Or go ahead with it?

About 6 weeks before this time, I was very broke. So broke that I
could not even go for Soccer training. I was at Cynthia’s place
on a Friday night. She had prepared a great meal as usual, and
we sat down to watch some movies from my Hard Drive
collection. Watching movies with her was usually fun. She was
always carried away by the suspense and she asked questions
every second: “What will happen?” “Will the man die?” “Did they
escape?”. I was always answering her, laughing at how she
reacts to the bloody scenes. But this day, I was not in the mood.

I was quiet all the way, not even hearing her questions, let alone answer them.

I was deep in thought. Lost. She tapped me.

“Kevin! Kevin!!!” She called. I jolted back to reality.

“Sorry darling.” I apologized.

“I had been calling you. You haven’t been yourself lately baby.

What is the problem?” She asked
“Nothing my dear. I was just lost in thought.”

I assured her.

“Khels. You know you can talk to me. Please tell me. I insist.”

She said, pausing the movie and sitting up to look at me. She gave me this quizzing look and I had to open up to her.

“I have been thinking baby. About this my broke issue. I had something in mind. But I don’t know if it would work out.” I said.
“Go on, baby” she encouraged me.
“You know that i have the PM’s fairly used laptop with me. It has
been with me for the past 4 months now. I want to sell it.” I said.

“What? What if you get caught? What if they ask for it?” She asked
“Baby see, this is how it works. You know that every year all the top Management Staff get a new laptop. Most times the ones that
are changed are still in fantastic shape. We usually send it down to lesser users or just keep it in the server room. I have some
laptops in the server room as far back as 2 years ago that still
work fine. I have looked at the pros and cons of the Pm’s laptop
and the NM does not even know that it is available for use.

I have been monitoring if it would come up but it has not.

5 months gone and no word from him about the laptop. Obviously he does not know. Well, I have put everything in place. I want to
sell it. I just want your approval.”

She was quiet for a while. She did not say anything for minutes.

“Are you sure that nothing will happen?” She asked.

“I am 100% sure baby. Don’t worry.” I told her.

“Ok then. Sell it. Write out the details for me.

Let me see if I can also get a buyer for it. The one who wants to pay higher is than we would sell it to.” She said.

She contacted her friend who in turn got her uncle to buy the
laptop.

Three days later, I was in the server room playing Zuma when the
intercom rang. As usual I let it ring for a while before I finally
picked.

“Hello Good Morning. This is IT.” I said.
“Mr.IT are you alone?” It was Cynthia.
“Yes. Why?” I asked.
She hung up.

Seconds later Cynthia was in the server room.

She looked very

light skinned face. She wore a red short sleeved shirt and a short

“It’s the money for the laptop. SO you are no longer broke. She just dropped the money now” Cynthia said.

I was overjoyed. I punched the air with my fists and drew her close to me. I embraced her.
“What would I have done without you?” I said to her.

I kissed her gently on the lips. Her lipstick tasted like strawberry.

I made to withdraw but she responded, holding my cheeks and kissing me back strongly.
