Must Read: Before She Dies

A knock on the door shook Thelda out of her reverie and she opened her eyes quickly.

She knew it was Anabel. She poured some quantity of the wine into the glass and carried it toward the door. The smile was still on her face when she got to the door. She opened it and watched Anabel step in and shut the door after her. They entered the sitting room and sat on a long couch.

“Why did you lie to me?” Thelda’s eyes shot up at her, her voice angered.

Anabel’s face became apologetic, “Sorry, I couldn’t imagine myself staying with that B***h.”
Thelda regarded her, “What do you mean?” She sipped her wine.

Anabel stroked the strap of her handbag, “That lady shouldn’t be trusted. She’s dicey.”
Thelda was becoming impatient, “You’re still speaking in riddles.”

Anabel’s voice became throaty, “She was the lady that destroyed my marriage to Zack.”
Thelda relaxed, sipped her wine and said slowly, “That’s bygone now.” She took another tot of the wine, “Let’s leave the past to get buried. The lady is changed.”

Anabel looked up at her, “That’s despicable.”

Her voice became laden with pains, “I can never forgive that lady. I can’t even stand the sight of that Lovepeddler. She_”
“You’ve to forgive her.” Thelda’s voice was authoritative and at the same time flippant, “She told me everything about her life and I’ve already employed her to take care of Stella and_”
Anabel interrupted, “You can’t do that.” It was almost a bark and she paused when she realized she was no longer in control of her emotion. Thelda’s face immediately became gruesome. Anabel had never spoken to her in such tone. That was the first time she was interrupting her speech since she came to know her. She was looking at Anabel as if she was just seeing her for the first time. Anabel managed to control her anger and said with a seemingly calm voice, “I’m sorry ma for sounding that way.

It won’t happen again.” She observed Thelda’s anger beginning to subside and she continued, “Ma, what I’m only trying to say’s that that lady will betray you and I don’t want that to happen. Immediately I left, I used my laptop to run a check on her and found out that Lucia is more dangerous that she already appears.” She looked at Thelda and read that she was no longer angry but still looked unconvinced, “Did Lucia mention to you that she betrayed Hillary Gunters, the guy who delivered her from prostitution, just because he told her he wanted them to quit crime?” Thelda was silent.

Anabel forced a smile. She knew from the blank expression on Thelda’s face that Lucia didn’t mention that, “Ma, let’s not trust that lady just like that. From what she did to me, from what she did to most other women and from what she did to Hillary, her lover, I don’t think it is wise trusting her. Let’s leave her and find some other reliable person. I can even arrange for someone who’ll take care of Stella. I can_”
