Fire God Of The Fire Island - Season 1 - Episode 40

The wise seriousness of Loki’s posture was soon replaced with his usually carefree expression. He smiled at Kate before he started dragging her away again.

“Isn’t it nice to simply be out once in a while?”
Loki asked her as they wandered, seemingly no destination in mind.

Kate had to agree. It was kinda nice doing, well, nothing. To simply walk around Fire Island, taking in the beautiful landscape and sounds of nature was soothing. Yes, it was nice.

Too nice, perhaps. A small voice in the back of her head was reminding her that she was the Peace Keeper, that she was pushing her luck as it was. But that voice was drowned out by the gentle and soothing voice of Nootau Chatan.

‘You are a living being, living a life that you so wished. No one has the right to tell you how to live, how to feel. They are not you, you are not them’.

Was all of this really ok? Holding hands with a man she kissed?

‘Why do you not see for yourself?’
Nootau Chatan suggested in a light tone of amusement. ‘What better way to learn the truth than to descovery it for yourself’.

Kate bit her lips. A little experiment to see if she was pushing her luck wouldn’t hurt, right?

Tugging on Loki’s hand, Kate made him to come to a stop. Loki turned to her, a look of curiosity on his face. Drawing a deep breath to calm her nerves, Kate placed her hand on Loki’s chest, leaned forward and kissed him softly on the lips. Loki was momentarily stunned but before he could respond, Kate pulled back, a light blush on her cheeks.

Loki blinked, and then smiled “Worried that last night was just a one off thing, hm?”

The blush on Kate’s cheeks darkened considerably. It was still unnerving how Loki seemed to read her well. “Just a little”.

“Don’t be”,
Loki said as he pulled Kate into his arms. “I’m sure the Fire God wishes for you to be happy. And you’re happy now, right?”

Happy? Yes, Kate was happy being with Loki like this.

“Yeah, I’m happy”,
Kate said as she rested her head on Loki’s shoulder, allowing herself a brief moment to simply enjoy this newfound peace.

“Hey”, Loki suddenly said with a sense of concern in his voice when he pulled away from Kate, his head turned toward the ocean. “Is that smoke?”
Kate snapped her head up and looked where Loki was looking. She felt her eyes widen when she recognised where they were on the Island. “It’s coming from the village”, she said as she pushed away from Loki, her pretty features creased with worry.

“That’s not ordinary smoke”,
Loki stated after he sniffed the air, his usually carefree features darkening slightly. “Something’s wrong. Come on”.

Kate didn’t need to be told twice, she took off in the direction of the smoke, following the trail she knew would lead them to the village. Loki was right at her side. He was concerned as well.

And, as they drew closer and closer, they had the right to be concerned.

Every thing within the tiny village was on fire, the flames licking at everything. And the people, they were panicking. Screams and yells, names being called in desperation filled the air, the thick, black smoke billowing upwards. Everyone on the Island must be able to see the ominous cloud.

“Ah, the huts are on fire!”
Kate cried as she stopped at the entrance of the village, her eyes wide in disbelief. The flames, they were nothing like she had ever seen or felt before. They felt…..darker.

“There are people trapped inside”,
Kate whispered, fear heavy in her voice and she turned to Loki, not knowing what to do. She had never encountered anything like this before. “Loki!”

“I know”,
Loki said as he lifted his arm to shield them from the roaring flames. “These flames they are not……”

Then Kate heard it; a faint whimper of help. Kate immediately turned in the direction of the noise and knew that a child was trapped within the flames. And she had to get the child before he or she perished.

Without another thought, she rushed forward, leaving Loki’s side and into the leaping roaring flames of a small hut.

“Kate!”

The flames that were roaring around her were unlike anything Kate had ever experienced before. They were hot, painfully so. Nootau Chatan was trying to push them back by using Kate’s own inner flames, but something was wrong. She had never felt anything so…dark and heavy before.

The fires were like they had a will of their own. As if someone was allowing them to cause havoc.

“Help Help! Help me, please!”
Lifting her hand in an attempt to shield herself from the smoke and flames, Kate rushed herself toward the sound of the frughtened voice, the young child crying hysterically. Which was good, it meant that Kate could follow his or her voice, leading her straight to them.

Wincing when a roof beam suddenly collapsed to the side of her, Kate peered through the flames, the smoke making her eyes water. Then, she saw the child, huddled in the corner of the hut, the only part that wasn’t on fire, curled into a foetal position as the flames edged closer and closer.
