Leaders of Okpale-Ogege, Edumoga in Okpokwu local government area of Benue State, Saturday stormed the state police headquarters in Makurdi, the state capital, to seek the deployment of more security personnel following the invasion by suspected herdsmen.
DAILY POST had reported that no fewer than five persons were killed and several others injured after gunmen suspected to be Fulani Herdsmen attacked the community last week.
The incident came few months after suspected herdsmen attacked the Ogege area in Okpale-Ingle ward in the same community.
The leaders of the affected communities besieged the police headquarters to brief the police on the incident and to assure the command of their willingness to cooperate with the force to check the crisis.
Led by Mr. Philip Oguche, Secretary of Edumoga Development Association EDEMA, the leaders, in one voice said, “We came to make a formal complaint and also asked for more police presence in Edumoga to check further crisis.”
Oguche who confirmed that a farmer was killed while several others sustained injuries in the crisis said, “We have been assured by the command that the crisis will not excalate, on our own we will do everything to ensure that reprisal attacks did not occur anywhere in Edumoga.”
Oguche, however, affirmed that normalcy had returned to the community.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Moses Yamu, who confirmed their visit to newsmen, said, “the community came to formally report the issue and to assure the command of their will gneiss to cooperate with the police to stem the crisis.
“Already the Commissioner of Police, CP, Bashir Makama, has deployed enough officers and men to the community to stem further crisis in the area.
“He (the CP) is personally monitoring developments in the affected community,” the PPRO stated.
