Those involved in unwholesome food processing and drugs would face punitive measures – Senate Spokesman

Senate Spokesman, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, has stated that the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome processed Food amendment bill, 2016 was a response to all forms of fake foods and supplements all over the federation.

Recalling that he first introduced the amendment bill in May this year, he affirmed that the Senate was satisfied that those involved in unwholesome processing of foods and its distribution would face punitive measures this time around.

“There are so much counterfeit drugs in Nigeria and as a responsible democratic institutions, the 8th Senate could not fold its hands but to legislate punishments for those involved in this unfortunate practices,”, Sabi noted.


Briefing the press after plenary on Thursday, Sabi said the consequence of fake drugs has been gruesome, wondering how some people placed premium on making money to the detriment of protection of lives.

He stressed that fake drugs’ menace has been historical, but was optimistic that the agency would be strong enough to fight quackery this time.

” Fake drugs menace has been a long challenge, but what the Senate has done by passing the amendment bill will enable the agency to flush out quacks”, he maintained.

It would be recalled that NAFDAC amendment bill report which was submitted by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Lanre Tejuosho, Ogun Central Senatorial District, has been passed into law.
