Elton John - Goodbye England’s Rose

Candle in the Wind is a tribute song (threnody) performed by English singer, pianist and composer Elton John, and co-written by English singer and lyricist Bernie Taupin.

The music was written in 1973 in honour of American actress, model and singer Marilyn Monroe, who passed away in 1962. It was produced by Gus Dudgeon.

However in 1997, Elton John performed a rewritten version of the song (Goodbye England’s Rose) produced by George Martin as a tribute to Princess of Wales, Diana.

This version of the song was much more successful than the original, reaching the number-one spot in almost every country countries.

Being the second best-selling single of all time (for sales in excess of 34 million), Candle in the Wind 1997 has been certified 19x platinum in Canada, 15x platinum in New Zealand, 14x platinum in Australia, 11x platinum in the US and 9x platinum in Spain, Germany, Switzerland and the UK.

I doff my hat to Sir Elton John.
