Sometime later I ended up back in the room I was staying in at Liam’s house—after a shopping spree with Liam’s mother. I was wearing Versace jeans and a Chanel sweatshirt with the symbol of the crossed C’s on my chest.

Kayleen was sitting on the bed, her mouth was agape and her eyes were wide.

“She’s gonna kill you?!” she screamed.

“Shh,” I shushed her. I walked to the door and peeked out. No one was snooping around. I closed the door and whirled around to glare at her.

“Dammit, Kayleen. You gotta be quiet.”

“Why?” she hissed quietly. “Shouldn’t we tell Liam?”
I shook my head before she’d even finished speaking.
“No. Not yet. We’re not sure if she’s really trying to kill me yet.” I paused. “If things start getting really bad, I’ll tell him.”
Kayleen didn’t seem to agree, but she still nodded.

“How are you gonna keep yourself safe until then?” she asked, worried.

I grinned and flashed a can at her. “Pepper spray,” I said simply.

A knock sounded on the door and then it opened, revealing Liam who was dressed in blue jeans and a white shirt. Again, he made an outfit so simple look like the sexiest thing on the planet. He looked at Kayleen’s guilty expression and then he looked at my innocent expression with mistrustful eyes.

“Liam,” I said, flinching at how high my voice was. I’ve always been a terrible at covering for myself. I couldn’t lie. And sometimes that was a terrible problem. “What are you doing here? I thought you were going to the office today.”
“I did.” He looked over my shoulder and smiled at Kayleen. “You’re Yvonne’s friend. Kayleen, right?”

I heard her squeak and I knew her face must’ve been more red than Santa’s suit.
“Well, your sister and her fiancé are here,” Liam told her, his lips were pressed in a thin line.
I tilted my head to the side in surprise. Simon and Kate were here? Now? Why had they decided to come now? I was already looking left and right to make sure I didn’t get murdered, and now they were here?

I let out a sigh. “Well let’s go say hi.”

We all shuffled downstairs. Liam took my hand and squeezed as we walked down the spacious corridor leading to the living room.
“Are you okay?” he whispered.
I looked over at him in surprise. “Yeah, why?”

“You look…” he struggled to find the right word. “…distressed,” he finally said.

Wow. He was a lot smarter than his pretty boy looks ever let on.
I hated to lie. Like I said I was terrible at it. But at this moment, I had to.

I forced a smile and said, “I’m fine. That dinner with all your colleagues just took a lot out of me, that’s all.”

He looked like he didn’t believe me, but he said nothing.
Simon and Kate were sitting together when Kayleen, Liam and I walked in. Kate jumped up and hugged her sister and then grinned at me.

“Hey, Vonna.” She looked at Liam flirtatiously. “Hi, Liam.”
