Indigo (Shade of a golden heart) - Season 1 - Episode 12

He had been watching her from his rear view mirror. Though he had walked out of the shop angrily, he had not gone. He wanted to see her again, he wanted to speak to her. He wanted to tell her how sorry he was, that someone would treat her that way.

He almost felt stupid as she was a total stranger and he didn’t know what her reaction would be. But he was willing to take that risk, he was willing to try…Phillip Hajjo was not the type of man that went after women, it was the other way round, women came after him.

This was more than desire, what he felt for this pretty lady was innocent, there were no strings attached, yet he found himself drawn to her still.

He found her in front of the shop with a worried look on her face as she searched her bag frantically. Her oval face carried this worried expression, liek she had lost something of great value.

Phillip was about to step out of his car when his phone rang, it was Moremi, but he decided to ignore it. He had to talk to her first, Moremi could wait, but this angel couldn’t.

He was driven by a force he had no control over. Even as he stepped out of the car and marched towards her, he knew he was acting like one under a spell but he didn’t care. He just wanted to talk to her and that was all.

Indigo felt weak, she didn’t know what to do next. She knew the security man wouldn’t let her back into the shop, even if he did, the boss would do nothing about her missing money.
‘Hello…’ his voice rumbled in her ears, causing her tummy to stir a little.

When she looked up, he realized she had been crying, her eyes were all swollen and reddish and the sight of those delicate features in such a hurtful state made his heart squirm.
‘You’ve been crying.’ He observed, he didn’t know what to say. He knew she was in great pain but Phillip didn’t had no clue on how to empathize, that was Chalya’s thing.

Indigo scoffed, then rolled her eyes, ‘Of course I have been crying. Who wouldn’t? This job meant everything to me. I got it today and I lost it today. So yeah, I have every right to shed tears.’ She snapped at him.But soon regretted it as she recollected her emotions, she felt bad for speaking to the man that had defended her rudely.
‘I am sorry Sir, I didn’t mean it. I’m just having a bad day.’ She stifled the urge to sob. She had cried enough, now she had to find realistic solutions to her problems as tears would not pay her bills and she couldn’t have her grandfather worrying.

Phillip had a feeling she was a good person, he felt like he had known Indigo all her life. A positive energy radiated out of her, one that he enjoyed being around. Even when she had spoken rudely to him, he quickly understood that she was reacting to what had taken place at the shop earlier, so he wouldn’t hold it against her.
‘Hey, it’s okay to be mad, if you weren’t I’d be worried.’ He walked closer to her.

Indigo laughed as she carefully considered his statement, this man sounded just like Papa. Whenever she had a bad experience and she fought hard to control the tears, Papa would always encourage her to let them flow, as tears were the body’s natural way of healing. He always told her that people who couldn’t cry were unhealthy in body, soul and mind.

He was glad he had made her laugh.
‘You sound like my grandfather.’ She murmured.
‘Does that mean I sound old?’ He arched a brow, his eyes glittering mischievously as he stared into her eyes.

Indigo had not meant it that way, ‘I am sorry, I didn’t mean it that way at all. You’re far from old…’ she stammered but he laughed it off and assured her that he was not offended.
‘My name is Phillip.’ He started.

He noticed she had changed into her clothes which accentuated her curves, she was even more beautiful than he’d imagined.
‘Indigo.’ She replied curtly.
‘Indigo?’ Phillip thought the name strange, he had never heard a name like that.

She was amused knowing he was confused by the nature of her name, most people were.
‘I know my name sounds weird, but whenever you look at the clouds in the evening, you’ll see the purple patches melting with the reddish circle of the sun, it’s something beautiful. It’s something hopeful, that’s what my name represents.’ She explained.

He loved the sound of her voice, he loved the way her eyes radiated confidence and resilience. This woman before him, was the type that was not easily swayed by the wind of problems. If she fell down thrice, she would rise three times more.
‘I am sorry about your job, but I think it’s best not to work in a place that women are not respected.’ He switched the conversation.
‘I know but…I should have been more careful.’ She shrugged, though the man had overreacted, everything was still on her. She had lost focus for a minute, and that had cost her another job.

‘Hey, nothing was your fault. People make mistakes, but that shouldn’t define them. If you had spilled that coffee on me, my reaction would have been different. I would have been mad, but, I wouldn’t ever raise my hand on a woman, that is barbaric and that’s what upset me. You have nothing to worry about, it’s a blessing to get sacked.’ He tried to assure her that everything was going to be alright.

Indigo’s shoulder’s sagged as she saw the future in her mind’s eye. It was bleak, it was uncertain. She knew Phillip was trying his best to make her feel better, but she needed to rise from these ashes and gather herself together.

Her stomach fluttered as she thought of her missing money, this terrified her more than anything else.
You’re worried about something else, I can tell that is it not related to your job.’ He watched her face the whole time.

Indigo swallowed the clump of pain that blocked her throat, how would she explain this to Annabel?
‘Nothing, I have to go back in there.’ She wiped her face and walked towards the security man whose features tightened the moment he spotted her coming.
‘Wait…talk to me, you can’t go back in there.’ Phillip grabbed her at once, he loosened his grip the minute he stared into her eyes. She stiffened at his touch. She seemed afraid of him.
Indigo reminded herself that she didn’t know much about this man. Yes, he had come to her rescue earlier, but that was not enough reason to trust him.

‘You need to stay away from me.’ She rubbed her wrist.

‘I am sorry I held you that way, but that man doesn’t care about you. Talk to me Indigo, I just feel you are a very good person and you need protection.’ Phillip couldn’t believe he’d say things like this to a total stranger, but words felt right. They felt like they’d had been buried within him for a moment as this.

She was starting to resent him, he had no idea of how much trouble she was in.
‘Okay, Phillip, I know you hit a guy for me, but that’s not a license to follow me around. I can take care of myself. I don’t need your help. You don’t know how much trouble I am in.’ She flashed him a final warning then stormed towards the entrance.

The security man had not allowed her into the shop, but she quickly explained that she had forgotten something. The moment she was let in, she decided to check out the dressing room, maybe her purse had fallen out of her bag somehow.

‘Where do you think you’re going?’ The manager had seen her from the entrance.
‘Sir, I lost something very important. I lost my money, it was a hundred thousand stuck in a yellow purse. Please, let me check the dressing room just once. Please…’ she begged, she had a feeling he wouldn’t let her in.

And she was right, ‘Get out of here before I call the Police, you have done enough, now you’re accusing us of stealing your money?’

Indigo heart was torn into pieces as she stared at the door to the dressing room.
