It is not a problem Aunty; it is just a
suggestion on the way forward, how far with
Mummy’s Money? I asked.

What do you mean by how far with mummy’s money? She countered: what sort of stupid question is that?

She sounded so irritated and defensive. So I
knew I had to come out hard because her
intention was to intimidate me but I refused to
be cowed.

Aunty! You are sounding angry already! Don’t you want to hear me out? I asked.

Suddenly she shouted at me: My friend! Say
what you want to say please and stop
patronizing me!

Her voice drew the attention of my other
Sisters as they came charging into the room.

They were outside gossipin
Wetin dey happen? Pauline asked
It’s your Sister o! She said she wants to talk
to me! Caroline replie
Then what did she say that made you shout
like that? Pauline asked
She is beating about the bush! Said Caroline:
Look Derby! If you are not ready to talk, I have
important things to do! She got up from the
bed and was moving towards the door.

I want my own share of my Mother’s Money I
said calmly.

She stopped mid way as if something had
struck her: What did you say? She asked me
I looked her straight in the eyes as I stood up
from the bed: I am twenty years old, I am an
adult, I have my own life to live and I want to
live it without being tied to anybody. It has
been over three weeks now mummy’s Money was paid into your account; you have not called us together to plan our future with us!

Is this how we are going to continue living?

Are we not going to leave this barracks? Is it
until the Army comes to throw us out?

Pauline interjected and said: haba derby!

Why are you talking like this nah? Can’t you see the things we have done so far? The electronics are for the house we shall rent nah!

I interjected: You should have rented the
House first before buying the electronics! But
you have already displayed and using the
Electronics here! You have furnished this
Batcher and made it comfortable for your
selves!

Caroline interjected: For ourselves?

Yes! For your selves! Because I was not in
your plans! You do not include me in your
discussions because I am the youngest here!

But I have a stake in all of these too because
we are family. I said.

Caroline smiled with sarcasm clapping her
hands and said: Hmmm, Derby now has the
guts to stand up to me in this house!

I interjected: In this Batcher!

Is it because of the Clothes you have been
sewing for us? Or is it because of your rich
friend Cordellia?
