was wondering why Mr. and Mrs. Chinedu
drove with us to Cordellia’s house, they should have gone straight home having been with me all day. I understood when we opened the door to Cordellia’s house and I was greeted by a
“Happy birthday” song by friends of Cordellia and I, madam Ronke, Amara and Tochi, were there, they were in S.S.2 they are big girls already. Captain Doctor Ayo was there with some of his military Colleagues.

I broke down and shed tears as my friends consoled me and made jest of me.

It was a day of mixed
feelings for me. I was laughing and crying, I
could not control my emotions.

We celebrated well into the night, there was
enough to drink and eat, I learnt some dancing
steps that night from Cordellia and Captain
Ayo, they were such good dancers, Captain
told a lot of jokes that got us laughing, I
wondered what a good humoured man was
doing in the Army.

I received my first GSM Phone that day from
Captain Ayo as a birthday gift, an Ericson T10
with a flip! I was wowed by the gift. I received
several gifts, even Tochi and Amara bought me a unique perfume. I felt alive again to know that so much love still abound somewhere.

At 11:30PM that night, when we were tired
and seated sipping juice and wine, Captain Ayo
came to the centre floor and cleared his throat
to get our attention.

Attention please! He said: Please can the
celebrant come forward? He beckoned at me, I stood up and walked towards him when I was like six feet from him he waved me to stop and I did.

I was all smiles as I wondered what
game he was up to again.

Derby Adanne Amadi! He called out all of my
names! What now? I pondered.

I saw you barely three months ago when you
were brought into the hospital half dead!

Yes! Go on! Go on! I said smiling and turning
to and fro to see the audience’s reactions
Derby you fought death! You conquered death!

You were unconscious for over four days!

Ooh! Captain, hit the nail on the head nah, I
wished.
I watched you at your most agonizing moment!

I watched you cry in pains when your lips and
eyes are swollen and you tried to break the
barriers that held you speechless! I saw you
being betrayed by your own blood, I saw you
heal up from your wounds, I saw how you
licked those wounds, and now you are back on
your feet: I know your Story Adanne!

Jeez! Only my Late Father calls me by that
name.

Adanne you are so young but you have
suffered untold hardship alone, You have gone
through hard times that you did not bring upon
yourself, yet you did not blame fate or any one
for your predicament, you have fought all you
battles alone, you faced the challenges thrown at you by the world alone and you are an over comer, even while fighting the hard battle alone you still looked out for your siblings!

Please Adanne! Captain went on his knees:
Stop fighting alone Ada! I want to fight with
you! I am a Soldier! I will die for you Adanne! I
love you from the first day I set my eyes on
you, that day you were brought into the
Hospital battered and looking so ugly, I love
the aura you emit today! You radiate like the
sun and you lit up our lives tonight, your
charms and your beauty has weaken my
military pride that I cannot help but kneel in
the presence of everyone here asking you to
let me be your love, let me into your lives and
I promise you that no more Lawals can come
near you! They will have have to pass through
me if they try and I assure you Ada, I will be
the Brick wall behind you.
