Colors of the heart - Season 1 - Episode 13

Skye
Brown, Brown signified stability and other masculine qualities I needed to depend on. I used to depend on Cherry, but I lost her, I used to depend on Teddy too but I lost him. So when he came into the picture, it felt like a blessing.

“Oh my God, I’m getting married next Saturday!” Cherry screamed as she entered Louisa’s office. Louisa screamed along with her in excitement before snapping out of it.
“Okay, calm the fück down….you’re going to scare my clients away” Louisa said sternly. Cherry sighed “His parents met my dad and we just fixed the date, there’s no time to waste anymore. It’s been five long months of trying to…trying to get over everything” Cherry said slumping on the couch.

“I’m glad everything worked out just fine, seriously….you both deserve each other. So, moving on to important things when are we going dress shopping?” Louisa asked.
“I’m wearing my mother’s wedding dress Louisa, it feels right and the Fadeyis gave Melvin and I their wedding bands, I feel ecstatic. We’ve never really gotten along before but I’m glad they’ve come to accept me” Cherry grinned.

Louisa’s smile fell “I’m sorry, did you say your mother’s wedding dress?” Louisa asked.

“Yes, what’s wrong?” Cherry asked.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk. Sweetheart that dress is so old and I’m pretty sure it was designed in the 80s, if not 70s. You do know your wedding is going to be featured on every tabloid in Lagos and Nigeria. You really want to be in every magazine wearing such an old dress. Why don’t I call my designer, consider this an early wedding present” Louisa said.
Cherry rolled her eyes “I don’t care about tabloids, all that matters is that I’m getting married to a man who loves me as much as I love him and he doesn’t care if I’m dressed as a clown or Queen Elizabeth. He loves me just the way I am” She said.
Louisa groaned “Cherry, I say this because I love you….your simplicity is nauseating. As your wedding planner and your lady of honor, I say we’re going to keep you sexy on your wedding day not simple and outdated like a fifteenth century bride” Louisa said.

Cherry laughed “Melvin and I already hired a wedding planner but thank you for offering” Cherry said with her tongue in her cheek.
“I am hurt” Louisa said faking a wounded expression.

“I’ll make it up to you, you can organise the bridal shower but no strippers” Cherry said.

Louisa winked “Alright, and you should know that your girl is off the market” Louisa said grinning.

Cherry gasped “Really, no wonder you’re glowing. Teddy finally stepped into his big boy pants and stopped whoring around?” She said with glee.

Louisa rolled her eyes “No, my world doesn’t revolve around Teddy. His name is Shola, he’s one of our investors. I think he might be the one” Louisa said.

“Oh… Wow….I thought…” Cherry started.
“You thought I was going to wait for Teddy to come back to me, it’s quite obvious that he’s moved on. I was simply wasting my time all those years” Louisa said playing with the rose gold diamond encrusted bracelet on her wrist.

“I always thought you and Teddy were going to end up together one way or the other” Cherry said with a sigh.

Louisa showed Cherry her wrist and changed the topic immediately “Shola gave me this on our first date, he said pretty girls deserve pretty things. Aren’t I lucky?” Louisa asked.
Cherry eyed the bracelet “It’s beautiful but…are you sure he’s not trying to buy your heart with flashy gifts and compliments? I don’t want you to get hurt again” Cherry said.

Louisa groaned “I’m fine, no one is trying to buy my heart. Shola loves me and he’s good to me. He doesn’t want a temporary fling, he wants a permanent fixture in his life. And he hasn’t even asked for sex, he’s a keeper” Louisa defended.

“Alright, alright…..I’m happy for you. When do I get to meet this Shola?” Cherry asked.
“How about Tomorrow, let’s all have lunch together” Louisa suggested. “Alright, it’s a deal” Cherry agreed.

“How’s your father?” Louisa asked. “He’s doing fine, he has someone in his life now. Thankfully she’s not my age mate, she’s older and more responsible. A beautiful soul, I’m happy for him” Cherry smiled.

Louisa smiled back. “And Skye, heard from her yet?” Louisa asked.

Cherry sighed “She keeps sending me paintings, she sent me black some weeks ago said it represented her black heart or what ever. Her paintings look depressing, I guess that’s how she feels” Cherry said sadly.
Louisa sighed “And…?” she asked. “And I didn’t respond as usual” Cherry said.
“Why?” Louisa asked. Chery sighed “She’s my junior sister, if she wants my forgives, she should come down from her high horse and ask for it. Sending me paintings isn’t going to change anything” Cherry said.

“What if she’s afraid?” Louisa asked. “She’s not scared, ashamed, maybe. Proud, definitely. But afraid, never” Cherry said.

“Will you send her an invite to the wedding?” Louisa asked. “No, Melvin and I have discussed it. It would be too awkward, maybe we could see her some other time” Cherry said.

“I second that, wouldn’t want dark clouds on your wedding day” Louisa said.
Cherry nodded “I do think about her all the time, I wonder if she’s doing well, what she’s doing, where she stays . Dad told me, he’d told her she would always be welcomed home. If she wants us, all she has to do is come back” Cherry said.
“Maybe she’s still growing up, the prodigal child will return home at her own time” Louisa said.

Cherry nodded, she hoped so.
“What are you painting?” Ben asked walking into the studio. Skye dropped the brush startled. “Nothing, I’m bored. Just playing around” She answered quickly.
“Go to bed, Skye it’s past one a.m. You barely got any rest today with the whole redecorating the house thing” Ben said rubbing her shoulders.

Skye smiled weakly “I can’t sleep, I tried. Why don’t you go to bed, let me finish this” Skye said leaning up to kiss his cheek.
“Okay, I’m going on a trip tomorrow. You want to come?” he asked. Skye got up and wrapped her arms around him. “Never, I will die from boredom” She teased.
“Yeah, it’s not like you’ll enjoy watching your boyfriend take pictures of animals and wild plants” Ben chuckled.

Boyfriend, the word sounded so foreign. At the very beginning of the previous year, Melvin had been the only man she wanted in her life.

Now she had Ben, he made her happier, stronger, better. It occurred to her that Melvin would have made her miserable and she was glad he’d dodged the bullet.
“I think…you look hot with a Camera but trust me it’s not something I’d like to watch for hours. I’d rather stay home and paint, something that equally bores you” Skye said sitting down again.

“Look at us, two boring people in love” Ben teased before moving to the other side of the room. He looked out of the window, but saw nothing in the darkness.

“Olivia is coming on Sunday” Ben said.
“What, why didn’t you tell me?” Skye shot out of her chair in panic.
“Because I knew you would get nervous as usual, she didn’t tell you because she wants to surprise you” Ben said.
“Well…thank you for telling me. I’ll just have to move my stuffs to the guest room, how long will she be here?” Skye asked.
Ben scoffed “Skye, I’m six years older than you are. You’re my junior sister’s best friend, I’m not ashamed of being in a relationship with you. I know Olivia, she’ll be ecstatic. You don’t need to hide anything from her, if you don’t tell her, I will” Ben said.

“Ben stop….I don’t want anyone to know about us. Can we just keep this hidden for now?” Skye said.
“We’ve been dating for two months, why don’t you trust me?” Ben asked.
Skye shook her head “What are you talking about? of course I trust you” Skye said.
“Do you?” Ben asked. Skye nodded. “Then tell me what you’re hiding, why did you leave home, why don’t you want Cherry to know about your whereabouts, why is Lagos a taboo topic and most importantly why aren’t you going for your sister’s wedding?” Ben asked.

Skye sighed “I left home because I needed space, they were smothering me at home. I wanted to grow up and be my own person. I want to be Skye Evans because I’m Skye Evans and not because I’m Cherry Evans’ junior sister” Skye explained gently.
She couldn’t tell him the truth and she hoped Olivia knew nothing about what had happened in Lagos.

“And why aren’t you going for Melvin and your sister’s wedding?” Ben asked curiously. Even he was going, Louisa had invited him.

“Because…..you know Melvin hates me. I don’t want to ruin their day, it’s best if I stay away for now” Skye said. It wasn’t entirely a lie, she was sure Melvin hated her and didn’t want her at their wedding.
Ben sighed “That’s ridiculous, I’m not a child Skye. You’re keeping secrets and secrets destroy relationships” Ben said.
“Forget about them, let’s focus on what’s at hand. How long will Olivia stay with us?” Skye asked.
Ben stared at her for a while. “I don’t know, it doesn’t matter. I’m telling Olivia when she comes” Ben said and walked out of the studio.

Skye sighed, for how long could she hide her ugly past? It’s been months already, how long will it haunt her for?
She looked at the Canvas and eyed the brown paint coating it. She wanted to tell Cherry how she felt, that she felt trapped because she couldn’t get out of her mistakes.
That she was happy because she’d found love.

She couldn’t use words to express her feelings, she couldn’t call Cherry or tell her in person.

So she painted and sent it to her sister and hoped that Cherry would understand and forgive her.
