Story: True Life Story Of An Addict

Boom! Boom! Boom!
Echoes from the dark slams;
Fear filled the room!
I held my teeth together lest it slacks.

I wobbled frivolously on the bed
My heart pumping at alarming rate;
Shadows of the living dead,
Rolling theirs eyes to and fro the gate!

What has she done?
Leave her alone please;
You evil powers be gone,
Come tranquility and peace.

On top of my voice I screamed,
Like a mad man whose right was denied;
“This must not happen oh God”
Words I said when suddenly I woke up from my dreams.

I roughened the bed spread around my body.
Am I actually in room made of blocks and bricks?
This is just too weird to believe.
Oh God keep Ini for me.

I almost cried but for Deola so nigh,
She won’t understand; no she won’t.
Mysteries so deep in darkness,
I dare not tell her, lest I have dual problem.

Heavenly Father, to You I come,
In lowly estate of a humble heart;
Confessing the evils I have done,
So great and merciful Thou art!

In Your love and goodness please keep Ini,
She is the love of my though I cheat still;
This is no good feeling oh God,
Save her from the wicked claws roaming this guilty sod.

Deola: What’s wrong with you?

Me: Wrong with me? What do you mean?

Deola: Why are you fidgeting? What is the problem?

Me: Fidgeting? Why?

Deola: I don’t know. You tell me.

Me: There is no problem woman. It’s just a cold.

Deola: And you want me to believe that right?

Me: Believe what you want. It is cold, ok?

Deola: Cold? Why didn’t you tell?

Me: I felt it’s not necessary.

Deola: Please Femi, don’t gamble with your life. What you called “just a cold” can lead to other things.

Me: I am sorry.

That night was terrible. I have never had such a pulsating, scary dream before. What is going on for God’s sake? In my dream, I saw a man dragging Ini on the floor. I tried to wrestle her away from the man but I couldn’t. My scream and plea for her release woke me up. Is this a confirmation of her dream. Fear gripped my heart again. Jesus! This must not happen. Deola came back with some capsule and asked me to drink up. She also brought a big blanket to cover my body.

Deola: Please we are going to the clinic together tomorrow. I need to carry out some test on you. You resume Monday, and a weak Femi is the last thing your boss will be looking forward to.

Me: Don’t worry dear. By morning, I will be fine. Let me relax ok?

Deola: No. You’re going with me, whether you want it or not!

Me: And if I insist, are you gonna drag me there? I said I will be fine by morning. Can’t you trust my words?

Deola: Sorry. Goodnight.

I became afraid to close my eyes to sleep again. All I was thinking about was Ini and her state of affairs. If not that I was with Deola, I would have called her line immediately. I la!d down there on the bed with my eyes wide opened. I shut out every form of sleep. I promised myself I was not gonna sleep again until dawn. I la!d still and said nothing, even if possible, not to breathe out. The space in-between Deola and I on the bed is big enough to contain 3 more people. She purposely left that acre of space cos she wasn’t pleased with my resistance and refusal to follow her to clinic. I no fit blame her now. Wetin dey ground now pass clinic matter baby. It is a spiritual warfare. I would have asked her to pray with me on Ini’s behalf but the fear of her chronic and annoying questioning put me off. I resolved however to leave her house as early as 5am under the premise of going to see my boss, a pastor for spiritual assistance, whether she objects to it or not. Little by little, the capsule she gave me earlier began a massive campaign against my resolve not to sleep. After about 20mins of engaging my eyes in a battle for supremacy and dominance, my resistance was breached. I slept like a baby.

The sound of someone moving in and around the room and the bed side woke me up. A glance at the clock hanging on the wall flashed a distress signal: 7:35am! Jesus! This is not what I planned oooo. I jumped out of the bed and made my way into the bathroom. I took my bath, dressed up and was ready to leave.

Deola: Femi what’s going on?

Me: Sorry I didn’t tell you. I booked an appointment with my boss yesterday to meet with him by 8am today.

Deola: Why? What’s going on?

Me: Nothing serious. He said he wants to tell me somethings before I resumed on Monday.

Deola: Femi you’re weak. You need to relax…

Me: Deola I am strong. I need to get going now!

Deola: Why are you always hard on me Femi? Why?

Me: We’ll talk when I get back.

I stormed out of her house, dialing Ini’s number all the way. She answered her phone,

Ini: Good morning.

Me: Thank God. How are you Ini?

Ini: I am fine. You?

Me: I am confused and distressed. Where are you now?

Ini: I am in the vehicle. On my way to work.

Me: Ok. Please let’s talk when you have the chance ok?

Ini: I hope all is well?

Me: By His grace, all is well.

Ini: Ok. See you then.
