Story: True Life Story Of An Addict

A quick glance at her face spiked my heart. Her presence brought with it a massive cold and fear. I comported myself as best as I can to make whatever she heard a ruse. I started eating like someone who just finished a 100-days dry fast.

She wore a lemon green top and a black skirt. Her bag hung carelessly on her left hand as if she wanna throw it away. One could see the uncertainty and anxiety on her face, with a little drop of sweat rolling down her left ears. She walked as fast as her leg could carry her as if she’s late for her flight. She sat besides my boss, who extended his hand to her for a handshake,

Deola: Good afternoon sir.

Oga: Afternoon Deola. How are you?

Deola: I am good sir. Mr. Femi how are you?

Me: I am fine ma. Welcome.

Oga: Can we take a walk Deola?

Deola: Yes sir.

She stood up looking at my face but I intentionally took no cognizance of it. I felt a little relieved as they both walked out of ears shot. Quickly I dialed my sister’s number (RIP) and informed her about what happened. She empathized with me and asked if I can come to her house. I made her see reasons why I can’t go that far away from work, seeing that I just resumed this week after a two weeks lay off (sick leave). She promised to come around over the weekend to keep me company. She also prayed for me before hanging up the call. Her words of encouragement met my needs. Her words were soothing, appealing and a healing to my failing mind.

After about 20mins or more, my boss and Deola came back. Her eyes this time are more fiery and stony. My heartbeat responded to her countenance by increasing its speed again. God have mercy! She sat down and started pressing her phone while my boss did the talking. The fear of receiving a provocative message from Deola made switched off my phone.

Oga: How are you doing Femi?

Me: I am ok sir.

Oga: Please hang in there. You’re not alone in this alright? Deola has agreed to go home with you and keep you company at intervals until you resume on Monday, ok?

Me: Is that so? Won’t she go to work tomorrow?

Oga: Don’t worry. I have taken care of that.

Me: I am not trying to be an ingrate or something sir but I think we will be asking too much from Miss Deola. I can be fine alone sir. Besides, my elder sister has agreed to come spend the weekend with me.

Oga: That’s fantastic! Well, we can still make use of Deola’s medical expertise. She’s definitely not coming to stay over in your house as you sister has promised to do but she will be coming around to check on your health.

Deola: (Looking cynically at my face with a heinous smile covering her lips, she said)

This shouldn’t be a problem Mr. Femi. We’ve done it before, and we can still do it again. Isn’t that right?

Me: Ok ma.

I knew something is wrong. Her sudden change in attitude to a nice and humble looking angel made me conclude that Deola’s got something uder her sleeves. I knew I was ready for 1,000,000 questions she comes to my house.

Oga: Femi, both of you can start going now, ok? I’ll come to your house later in the day to check on you.

He called his driver and asked him to take us home. Can you imagine me and Deola inside the same vehicle home in context of what had just happened and with the expectant reaction to what she has heard as to who my fiancee really is or was?

*In 9ice’s voice* Gongo a so, kutupu a wu.

One of my colleague helped bring my bag from my desk. In his infallible character, my boss visited the ATM Machine, cashed some money and handed it over to me (#10,000). He walked us to the garage where the driver was on standby, waiting for us. His final word to Deola was,

Oga: Please, look after him.

And her response?

Deola: That’s no problem sir. He will be in safe hands.
