Story: True Life Story Of An Addict

She left her car at the parking lot and joined me in my boss’ official car. At first she sat with the driver in the front seat but later, only God knew what changed her mind, she dropped and joined me at the back seat. She wore a stern look that suggested there is no fooling around here, something is about to happen. She made some phone calls to her office, asking one of her colleagues to help her check if she left her glasses on her desk cos, quite rarely will one see Deola with no glasses. When her colleague confirmed that she did left her glasses on her desk, she asked her to keep it for her until she resumed Monday. While she was talking on the phone, my mind had prepared a perfect response to whatever questions she’s gonna ask me. Not only that, I was ready for anything; whatever the outcome is, I will serve it. My heart spiked again as we pass through the site of the accident. The truck was about to be tolled cos it has already caused a massive hold up. I felt as if my heart was withdrawn away from my body and left empty. I bowed down my head cos I couldn’t bear to look at the scene anymore. I was completely divided in thoughts and persons.

There were 2 Femis in the car with Deola.

First Femi: A guy whose heart has been punctured by the claws of pain because of the demise of Ini. I was living in shock of my life. How fast people die. Imagine a lady I spoke with this morning and few hours later, she is dead! What a swift twist of fate. I was a broken man, detached from everything around me and centered my thoughts on how it will be possible to continue living without seeing Ini again. Is this gonna be possible? Will I survive it? River of tears gathered in my eyes, but I dare not shed a drop cos of the lioness beside me.

Second Femi: A guy who is determined and resolute to face Deola off, whatever happens – even if it means we are gonna break off the relationship. I mean, I can’t deny knowing Ini, let alone denying our sweet sweet relationship. If I have never respected her while she was alive, I think the time to start is now. She loved me until she died, and so I must show her my respect and appreciation by sticking to the fact that yes I know her, she was truly my fiancee but now, she is late. I made up my mind to give it back to Deola in same measure she brings it. I was ready for her WAR!

After about 15mins of a deafening silence, apparently for the departed Ini or so, she broke the silence,

Deola: How are you Femi?

Me: I am ok.

Deola: Are you sure?

Me: Of course I am.

Deola: I don’t think so. Who is your fiancee?

Me: She’s dead!

Deola: Excuse me? Please don’t tell me what I heard is true.

Me: You better believe whatever you hear. I lost my fiancee today, that’s for emphasis.

Deola: I better not trust my ears right now.

Me: If you can get me a mic, I’d say the same thing over and over again. Her name is Iniobong, if you must know. She passed away this morning. We just passed by the scene.

Deola: Jesus! Femi who am I to you?

Me: A friend, a sister.

Deola: Oh God! Femi please. Those words are hurting me.

Me: I am sorry.

Deola: Driver please stop the car!

Me: Don’t stop, keep moving.

Suddenly she opened the door on motion and threatened to jump out of the car. Thank God say I get small power. I struggled with her and overpowered her. I succeeded in closing the door and securing her too.

Me: Please lock the doors!

I yelled at the driver. Then I turned to her and said,

Me: Are you out of your mind? Are you crazy? What the f**k is wrong with you? Do you wanna kill yourself? I have had enough for one day. I can’t let you land me in jail.

She started crying uncontrollably. I was so so embarrassed and disgusted. If not for the driver, I would have been physical on her. I kept quiet and allowed her do her crying thing until she’s had enough. When I sensed she’s stopped crying, I asked the driver to stop the car,

Me: Now you can get down if you want.

Deola: No, I’ve changed my mind. Let’s go.

Me: Then I don’t want anymore questions.

Deola: Ok.

Soon, we got home. The driver waited for like 10mins before going back to office. Deola sat down quiet and kept smiling. The drama was strange to me cos I was like, “isn’t this the same girl that almost killed herself earlier?” The anger in me increased enormously. But for Ini’s death, seriously guys, I for do Deola one wickedness. I just perch for one corner in the sitting room with my head bowed. People, I don’t wish even my enemies the kind of mood I was in that moment. It was a soul-piercing, body-thrusting, and brain-draining kind of feeling. Heat and sweat swept across my body as I lost myself in another soul-searching thought.

When I lifted up my head, Deola was no longer on seat. Where this girl dey? Has she gone? But I didn’t hear her leave now, eventhough the door was slight opened. Some sounds from the kitchen confirmed to me that she’s in there. She came out of the kitchen to the sitting room with the unexpected: A KNIFE in hand!
